About this place

Off the coast of Jungmun in Seogwipo, black stone columns stand packed together along the cliffs as if someone had carved them. Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff is a stretch of shore made of basalt columns, formed when lava cooled and cracked at the sea's edge, and it was designated a Natural Monument in 2005. The sight of white surf breaking between the pillars is far more powerful in person than in photos.

How the columns formed

When lava reaches the sea, it cools rapidly from the surface and shrinks. That contraction cracks the lava in a regular pattern, and the blocks split along the cracks into long columns running from top to bottom. Geologists call this columnar jointing; in Korean it is jusangjeolli. Over a long time the waves then cut back the cliff and exposed the sides of the columns like a mural.

Seen from above, most of the columns are four- to six-sided. Most stand upright, but some lean or lie almost flat. According to the national heritage record, columnar joints run for about 3.5 km along the coast of Jungmun-dong and Daepo-dong, and the tallest columns reach around 20 m. Tourism information gives 30–40 m in height and about 1 km in length, so sources differ on the numbers. The section visible from the viewing deck is the best-known part.

What to see

  • Viewing deck: A boardwalk leads from the clifftop down towards the sea, so you can see the columns from several angles. The flat column tops that step down into the water like stairs are especially striking.
  • The waves: On windy days the surf explodes white against the columns. On calm days the water is clear and the shapes of the columns stand out sharply.
  • Dol hareubang: Stone grandfather statues, the symbol of Jeju, stand in the garden near the entrance.
  • The old name: The area used to be called Jisatgae, so signs also show the name "Daepo-dong Jisatgae".

Good to know

  • Visitors once climbed freely over the rocks, but access is now restricted for protection and safety, and the cliff can only be viewed from the deck.
  • Jeju has other columnar joints, but few are as large and as fully exposed as these, which is why they are a standard stop on any tour of southern Jeju.

Why it matters

Columnar joints show, in a single place, what happens when basalt lava solidifies and how waves later carve the coast. That makes the site valuable not only as scenery but as a place to study and observe how volcanic Jeju was formed. The protected area covers more than 380,000 m². From the deck, compare the polygon patterns on the column tops, and the places where the columns stand upright with those where they lean or lie down.

Tripto tips

  • Hours and fees: Open 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:40), every day of the year. Admission is KRW 2,000 for adults and KRW 1,000 for children and teenagers. There is a paid car park.
  • When to go: Mornings, when the sun lights the cliff face, are best for photos. A day with big waves is more dramatic, but viewing may be restricted when a typhoon approaches.
  • How long: 30 minutes to an hour is enough to walk the deck slowly.
  • Combine with: It is close to the Jungmun Tourist Complex and Jungmun Saekdal Beach, so it fits easily into a day in western Seogwipo. The address is around 36-24 Ieodo-ro, Seogwipo.
