About this place

A few times a month, when the tide drops especially low, the sea off Muchangpo parts and a path about 1.5 km long appears all the way to the uninhabited islet of Seokdaedo. Muchangpo was also the first beach on Korea's west coast to open to bathers, in 1928, so you can combine a summer swim, tidal flat foraging and a west-coast sunset in one trip. It is a calmer alternative to Daecheon Beach, Boryeong's busiest seaside.

The west coast's first beach

Muchangpo Beach lies on the coast of Ungcheon-eup in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province. The sand stretches for 1.5 km and is about 50 m wide, and the water is only 1–2 m deep with a gentle slope, which makes it popular with families. A long belt of pine forest runs behind the beach, so there is shade even in high summer.

The "mysterious sea road" to Seokdaedo

What made Muchangpo famous is the sea parting. At low tide, a ridge of sand and gravel that sits higher than the surrounding seabed rises above the water and links the beach with Seokdaedo. It usually happens two or three times a month around the full and new moons, and when the path is open it fills with people catching crabs and digging for clams. Boryeong publishes the timetable in advance each year; for 2026 it listed 57 openings between 3 January and 28 December, mostly between early morning and midday.

What to look out for

  • Seokdaedo: the small, uninhabited islet at the end of the sea road. Time your walk for when the path is fully exposed.
  • Sunsets: the beach faces west, so in the evening the sun sets out towards Seokdaedo.
  • Pine grove: the pines along the shore let you mix sea bathing with a shady forest walk.
  • Sea road festival: around the openings, events such as bare-handed fish catching and clam digging are held.

Why the sea parts

The sea road appears because the seabed between the beach and Seokdaedo is higher than the water around it. The Yellow Sea has a very large tidal range, and around the full and new moons, when the moon's pull is strongest and the tide falls lowest, this ridge emerges above the surface. That is why the path appears every month of the year, not only in summer. Wind and weather can change how long it stays open and how wide it is on the day.

Tripto tips

  • Timing: dates and times depend on the tides. Check the official Boryeong sea road timetable before you go, and arrive a little before the opening time.
  • Safety: the tide comes back in faster than you might expect. Follow the announcements and the official times, and do not linger on Seokdaedo. Shoes for mud flats make the walk easier.
  • Time needed: 2–4 hours is enough for the sea road and a walk along the beach.
  • By train and bus: from Ungcheon Station on the Janghang Line, a local bus takes about 10 minutes (about 5 km); from Daecheon Station it takes about 40 minutes (about 20 km). Buses run about 13 times a day from Ungcheon and 16 times a day from Daecheon, so check times in advance.
  • By car: the beach is close to the Ungcheon (Muchangpo) exit of the Seohaean Expressway.
