About this place
Dosan Seowon brings together the small school where Toegye Yi Hwang, Joseon's most celebrated Confucian scholar, taught his students and the academy his followers built after his death. It sits on a hillside above the Nakdonggang River in Dosan-myeon, Andong, and in 2019 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the nine "Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies". Its plain, modest buildings still reflect the way Joseon scholars studied.
History: from Toegye's own school to the heart of Yeongnam Confucianism
After retiring from office and returning home, Yi Hwang (1501–1570) built Dosan Seodang in 1561 as a place to study and teach. He designed it himself, and it is the oldest building in the complex today. Nongun Jeongsa, the dormitory for his students, was built at the same time.
When Yi Hwang died in 1570, his disciples enshrined his memorial tablet in the Sangdeoksa shrine in 1572 and completed the academy in 1574 with the Jeongyodang lecture hall and two dormitories. In 1575, King Seonjo granted a name board written by the famous calligrapher Han Seok-bong, making it a royally chartered academy and the centre of Confucian learning in the Yeongnam region. Yi Hwang's thought influenced Confucianism in Japan as well as in Korea.
What to see
- Dosan Seodang: The small, plain building where Yi Hwang lived and taught. Its lack of decoration shows how much he valued simplicity.
- Jeongyodang (Treasure): The lecture hall, hung with the "Dosan Seowon" board written by Han Seok-bong. The east and west buildings in front were the students' dormitories.
- Sangdeoksa (Treasure): The shrine at the very back holding Yi Hwang's tablet. It is usually closed.
- Janpangak: The building that stored the woodblocks used to print Yi Hwang's writings.
- Sisadan: A raised platform across the river from the academy. To honour Yi Hwang, King Jeongjo held a special state examination in the pine grove here to select scholars from the Yeongnam region, and a stele was erected to mark it. The grove disappeared when the Andong Dam was built, and today only the stele pavilion remains on a tall man-made mound.
Good to know
Dosan Seowon appeared on the back of the old 1,000-won note used from 1975 to 2007, so many Koreans knew the view from their wallets before they ever came. The academy long upheld a strict social order: in the 1880s it refused a royal order to admit sons of concubines, leading to more than four years of conflict.
Tripto tips
