About this place

High on the Sanbok-doro hillside road in Choryang-dong, Busan, a giant red postbox stands on a rooftop overlooking Busan's North Port and Yeongdo Island. Postcards you write here reach their recipients only one year later. This small observatory, built in memory of the letter-loving poet Yu Chi-hwan (pen name Cheongma), stays in the mind for its hillside views and its slow mail.

The poet who loved letters

Born in Tongyeong, Yu Chi-hwan served as principal of Gyeongnam Girls' High School in Busan and had close ties to the Choryang hillside area. He is famous for exchanging thousands of letters with the sijo poet Lee Young-do, and his poem "Happiness", about the feeling of writing a letter by a post-office window, is still widely read. That is why Busan's Dong-gu district named its tribute to him a "postbox".

The observatory was built as part of the Sanbok-doro Renaissance regeneration project and opened on 15 May 2013. At the opening the first floor housed a "poet's room" introducing Cheongma's poems and papers, with an exhibition pairing his poems with paintings by an artist who had known him. At first the postbox delivered letters after six months; today it runs as a slow postbox that delivers postcards after a year.

An observatory on the hillside road

Sanbok-doro means a road running along the waist of a mountain. Behind Busan's old downtown, refugees from the Korean War era built homes on the steep slopes and whole neighbourhoods rose in tiers; Mangyang-ro links them together. From the observatory you see stairs and rooftops tumbling down the hillside with the port beyond, a clear picture of how Busan squeezed itself between the mountains and the sea. Dong-gu has also named the road from Gyeongnam Girls' High School towards Sujeong-dong the "Poet's Road" and developed it as a culture street.

Floor by floor

  • Ground-floor stage: a small courtyard with stepped seating for outdoor performances.
  • First-floor gallery: a glass-walled room of about 90 m² showing work by young Busan artists, with the harbour outside the windows.
  • LP corner: choose a record and listen for free.
  • Rooftop: stand by the red postbox for a view over North Port, Yeongdo and the houses stacked up the hillside.

Tripto tips

  • Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–19:00, Sunday 09:00–18:00. Closed on Mondays, public holidays and the Seollal and Chuseok holidays. Admission is free.
  • Time needed: 30 minutes to an hour to write a postcard and enjoy the view.
  • Slow postbox: send a card to yourself or your family a year from now. Make sure the address will still be valid in a year.
  • Busan Tour Pass: since 2024 the observatory has been a Busan Tour Pass partner, and pass holders receive a postcard and stamp for the slow postbox.
  • Getting there: there is no car park. It is only about 1 km from Busan Station as the crow flies, but the climb is steep, so a taxi or bus is easier. You can also walk up the Ibagu-gil trail from Choryang, across the road from Busan Station, to the hillside road.
  • When to go: from sunset, when the lights come on around the harbour.
