About this place
Rising along the southern edge of downtown Daejeon, Bomunsan is a 457.6 m city mountain and one of the Eight Views of Daejeon. Climb to the old Baekje fortress near the top and the whole city spreads out below you. Its biggest advantage is access: trailheads are scattered across several neighbourhoods, so you can step off a city bus and start walking uphill.
History: from Baekje frontier to city park
Local tradition says the mountain was once called "Treasure Mountain" because treasure lay buried in it, and the name later became Bomunsan. During the Three Kingdoms period this was the border between Baekje and Silla, and Bomunsanseong Fortress is the reminder: a small Baekje stronghold about 300 m around, restored in 1992. Other heritage on the slopes includes a rock-carved seated Buddha thought to date from the late Goryeo period and a stone basin from the Bomunsa temple site.
The mountain was designated a park in 1965. An open-air concert hall, a youth plaza and the sports facilities of Sajeong Park followed, and Bomunsan became the local mountain that Daejeon residents visit most.
What to see
- Bomunsanseong Fortress: sit in the pavilion on the walls and Daejeon and the ranges beyond lie in front of you. The view is best at sunset.
- Sirubong and Jangdaeru: the highest peak, topped by the Jangdaeru pavilion. Trees block much of the view, so the city panorama is better from the fortress.
- Mineral springs: about 20 springs in the valleys make good rest stops.
- Gochoksa's Maitreya rock: below Sirubong, the small temple of Gochoksa has a natural rock said to resemble a Maitreya Buddha.
- Seasons: cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, hydrangeas in early summer and maples in autumn.
Good to know
- There are about 10 official trails starting in different parts of Jung-gu. Most signposts are in Korean only, so keep a map app open.
- The classic loop (4.8 km) starts at the old Bomunsan cable car plaza, climbs past the Boundae lookout and the fortress towards Sirubong, then drops into the valley and returns via the open-air concert hall and Songhaksa temple.
- A 4.3 km alternative starts at the Sajeong Park car park, climbs steeply behind Gochoksa to Sirubong and comes back down the western ridge.
Nearby
- Daejeon O-World: a zoo and amusement park at the foot of the mountain; a morning hike and an afternoon at O-World works well with children.
- Rock-carved Buddha of Bomunsan: a short detour from the trails to a late-Goryeo Buddha carved into the rock face.
- Daejeon Aquarium: the former Aqua World below the mountain, remodelled and reopened in 2015.
Tripto tips
- Hours and fees: the mountain and park are always open and free. There is parking at Sajeong Park.
- Suggested route: first-timers can simply climb to Bomunsanseong; 1 to 2 hours return is enough to enjoy the view.
- When to go: cherry blossom season and autumn foliage draw the biggest crowds. If you stay for sunset at the fortress, bring a head torch for the way down.
