About this place

The stream that drains Gyeongpo Lake into the sea splits the coast in two: Gyeongpo Beach to the north, Gangmun Beach to the south. Gangmun is the smaller, quieter neighbour, but it packs a tiny fishing harbour, a row of raw-fish restaurants and the village's guardian pole, the jindobaegi, into one short stretch of sand, which makes it a good place to see a Gangneung seaside village up close.

A small beach next door to Gyeongpo

Gangmun Beach lies on the shore of Gangmun-dong in Gangneung. The mouth of the Gangmuncheon, where Gyeongpo Lake empties into the sea, marks the border between the two beaches. Cross the Gangmun Sotdae Bridge over it and you are on Gyeongpo Beach, so the two are easy to combine on foot. At the southern end sits Gangmun Port, a small harbour with a red lighthouse at the end of its breakwater. Hotels, cafés and seafood restaurants line the back of the beach, so there is always somewhere to sit with a sea view.

Jindobaegi, the village's sacred pole

You will hear the word jindobaegi a lot here. It is the local Gangneung name for a sotdae, a tall wooden pole topped with carved birds: a pine pole crowned with a three-pronged branch, with wooden ducks perched on top. The pole stands about 5 m high, and villagers have long worshipped it as a guardian spirit.

According to local legend, a pole drifted ashore at Gangmun, the villagers pulled it out of the water, stood it up and held a rite, and the village prospered from then on. The jindobaegi was believed to ward off the three disasters of flood, wind and fire. Neighbouring Anmok has a similar pole, and it is said that the ducks on both face north-west, towards the Daegwallyeong Pass. A sculpture modelled on the jindobaegi stands in the middle of the Sotdae Bridge, and many visitors toss coins at it and make a wish.

Things to do

  • Beach walk: start at the Gangmun Port breakwater, cross the Sotdae Bridge and carry on along Gyeongpo Beach for views of both the sea and Gyeongpo Lake.
  • Diving and fishing: the deep water and rich marine life draw scuba divers, and the harbour breakwater is busy with anglers all year round.
  • Raw fish: the restaurants around Gangmun Port serve fish landed from the East Sea.
  • Drama location: seaside scenes of the K-drama "She Was Pretty" were filmed here.

The sand is dotted with photo spots such as a swing, giant letters and a frame-shaped bench. After dark the Sotdae Bridge is lit up, which makes it a popular evening stroll.

Tripto tips

  • When to go: swimming is a summer affair. Gangneung's beaches open in early or mid-July and close in late August; in 2026 Gyeongpo opened on 4 July and the other beaches ran from 10 July to 23 August. Spring and autumn are quieter and better for walks and sunrise.
  • Time needed: about 1 hour for the beach and the bridge, half a day if you add Gyeongpo Beach and Gyeongpo Lake.
  • Fees and facilities: the beach is open 24 hours and free. There is a car park and toilets.
  • Getting there: from Gangneung Station take a city bus towards Gyeongpo (the 202 routes), get off at Gyeongpo Beach, cross the Sotdae Bridge and walk south. Expect heavy traffic on the coast road in peak summer.
  • Nearby: Chodang-dong, known for its soft-tofu restaurants, is about a 20-minute walk away, and Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpodae Pavilion are close by.
  • Safety: waves on the East Sea can build up suddenly. Outside the official swimming season it is safer to stay out of the water.
