About this place
Right next to the pine woods of Daewangam Park in Ulsan's Dong-gu district, Ilsan Beach is a fine sandy beach about 600 m long and 40–60 m wide. The water is shallow – around 1–2 m – and usually calm, which makes it a good place for children to paddle and swim. Finding a beach like this in the middle of an industrial city, with shipyard cranes on the skyline, is part of its appeal.
Where Silla kings came to rest
Local tradition says the kings of Silla came here to enjoy the scenery and rest. Eopungdae, a rocky rise between the beach and Daewangam, is known as the spot where they stayed. Next door is Daewangam, linked to the legend that the queen of King Munmu – the Silla ruler who vowed to become a dragon and guard the kingdom after death – was laid to rest in the sea. Dong-gu district now promotes the beach area as the "Kings' Retreat".
What to see
- Sand and shallows: the beach slopes gently, so it is easy to walk along the water's edge. The average summer water temperature is given as about 21°C.
- Views to Daewangam Park: from the end of the beach you can see the wooded coast and small islets of Daewangam Park, and the beach leads straight to the park's northern entrance.
- Daewangam suspension bridge: inside the park, a 303 m suspension bridge crosses between rocky outcrops above the sea, within walking distance of the beach.
- Beach festival: a festival is held each July, timed with the start of the swimming season.
The sea in a shipbuilding city
Ilsan Beach is about 1 km north of Bangeojin harbour and covers around 26,000 m². Standing on the sand, you see the woods of Daewangam Park on one side and the shipyard cranes of Ulsan's Dong-gu district on the other. Nearby Hwaamchu Lighthouse has a lighthouse exhibition and a tall observatory with wide views over the port of Ulsan. Dong-gu district is also working on a "Kings' Walk" linking Eopungdae with Yonggul, a sea cave in Daewangam Park, over a distance of about 1.1 km.
Tripto tips
- Time needed: about 1 hour for a beach walk, or half a day with Daewangam Park and the suspension bridge.
- Opening: the beach is open all year and free. Lifeguarded swimming is only offered in summer.
- Suggested walk: start at Ilsan Beach and follow the coast through the woods of Daewangam Park to the rocks of Daewangam itself. Early morning or late afternoon is cooler.
- Getting there: take a city bus from central Ulsan towards Dong-gu and get off at the Ilsan Beach (일산해수욕장) stop; check routes and times in a map app. There is parking by the beach.
- Good to know: the beach area is being redeveloped as a marine leisure hub, so some sections may be under construction depending on when you visit.
- Staying over: the beach is surrounded by guesthouses, hotels and restaurants, so if you want to see sunrise at Daewangam, staying here the night before is a good option.
- Suspension bridge: crossing the Daewangam suspension bridge is free, but access may be restricted on very windy days.
