About this place

On the summit of Hwajeongsan (203 m) in Dong-gu, Ulsan, stands a 63 m observation tower. From the top you look straight at the Ulsandaegyo Bridge, a 1,800 m suspension bridge, as well as Ulsan Port, the city's petrochemical, car and shipbuilding complexes and the mountains that ring the city. It is the best place to see industrial Ulsan in a single view, and with free entry and opening until 21:00 it is also a good night-view spot.

The bridge and the industrial city

The Ulsandaegyo Bridge links Maeam-dong in Nam-gu with Ilsan-dong in Dong-gu. It is a 1,800 m suspension bridge, begun in 2009 and opened on 1 June 2015, with a main span of 1,150 m between its two towers. It cut the drive from Nam-gu to Dong-gu from about 40 minutes to around 20. It was designated a motorway on opening, though, so pedestrians and cyclists cannot cross it and drivers pay a toll, which makes the observatory the best way to enjoy the bridge up close.

The view also shows why Ulsan is called Korea's industrial capital. Towards the sea lie shipyards lined with huge hull blocks and cranes; across the mouth of the Taehwagang River, a petrochemical complex bristles with chimneys and storage tanks. Behind them, ridge after ridge of mountains rings the city, so factories and peaks share the same frame. The observatory was built on Hwajeongsan, near the bridge's eastern approach, to give a head-on view of the bridge and the port.

What to see

  • Indoor observation floor: a glass-walled floor with views in every direction over the bridge, the port, the industrial zones along the shore, the city and Ulsan's best-known mountains. There are telescopes and panels identifying what you see.
  • Night view: after sunset the bridge illuminations and the factory lights come on together, and the grey industrial city looks completely different.
  • Extras: an AR/VR experience zone, a 4D-VR theatre, a Dong-gu souvenir shop and a café.
  • Filming location: in the 2023 drama Death's Game, Choi Yee-jae's narrow escape from a secret organisation was filmed on the Ulsandaegyo Bridge, and the observatory gives the best view of it.

Tripto tips

  • Opening hours: 09:00–21:00. Closed on the second and fourth Monday of each month and on the days of Seollal and Chuseok.
  • Fees: entry and parking are both free.
  • Time needed: 40 minutes to an hour for the observation floor; longer if you wait for the night view.
  • Best time: go up about an hour before sunset to see both the sunset and the lights. Visibility is best on clear, breezy days.
  • Photo tip: for night shots from the indoor floor, press your lens right up against the glass so the interior lights do not reflect.
  • Getting there: a car or taxi from central Ulsan is easiest; there is a car park at the observatory.
  • Nearby: Daewangam Park is close by, and across the bridge in Jangsaengpo (Nam-gu) is the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum, so you can cover both districts in a day.
