About this place

Climb the pine paths and you find a Buddha on almost every rock: some carved in shallow relief, some sitting headless. Namsan in Gyeongju was the most sacred mountain of the Silla kingdom, and its valleys hold the remains of about 100 temples, 80 stone Buddhas and 60 stone pagodas. That is why the whole mountain is called a museum without a roof.

History: where Silla began and ended

Namsan centres on two peaks, Geumobong (468 m) in the north and Gowibong (494 m) in the south, and stretches roughly 8 km north to south and 4 km east to west, with some 40 valleys. The Samguk Yusa records that state affairs discussed on Namsan always succeeded.

Park Hyeokgeose, Silla's founding king, is said to have been born at Najeong on the western foot of the mountain. Another legend says the mountain spirit appeared before King Heongang to warn of the kingdom's fall, but the king failed to understand. The site of Poseokjeong, associated with the tragic end of Silla, also lies on its slopes. On the northern part stands Namsansinseong, a fortress built in 591 and largely rebuilt in 679.

The mountain became a Historic Site in 1985 and, as part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

What to see

  • Chilburam rock-carved Buddhas (National Treasure): high on the eastern side, a Buddha triad is carved into a rock screen, with Buddhas on all four faces of a boulder in front. They are dated to the 8th century.
  • Tapgok rock carvings: a 9 m boulder covered on all sides with pagodas and Buddhas, also called Buddha Rock.
  • Seated stone Buddha of Mireukgok (Borisa): a large Buddha with a gentle face, a national Treasure.
  • Yongjangsa temple site: a three-storey pagoda in Yongjang valley and a rock-carved seated Buddha. In the early Joseon period the writer Kim Si-seup lived on Namsan and wrote Geumo Sinhwa, often called Korea's first work of fiction.
  • Samneung pine forest: twisting pines around three Silla royal tombs, the usual starting point for the western routes and a favourite with photographers.

Tripto tips

  • Routes: first-timers usually start at Samneung on the west side and climb past the Samneung-gol carvings to Geumobong. The eastern side, linking Tapgok, Bulgok and Chilburam, is worth a separate day.
  • Trail hours: you can enter 04:00–16:00 from April to October and 05:00–15:00 from November to March. There is no admission fee.
  • Time: half a day for Samneung to Geumobong and back; about 2 hours to see a few sites at the foot of the mountain.
  • Preparation: many paths are rocky, so bring water, snacks and shoes with good grip.
  • Information: questions about the sites and walks go to the Gyeongju Namsan Research Institute.

Nearby

  • Poseokjeong: a Silla garden site on the western foot, easy to visit on the way to Samneung.
  • Seochulji Pond: a pond at the eastern foot, known for its summer lotus.
  • Tongiljeon Ginkgo Road: a road covered in yellow ginkgo leaves in autumn.
