About this place
Subong Park wraps around the whole of Subongsan, a small hill in the middle of Michuhol-gu, Incheon. It is a memorial park, with a memorial tower to those who died in the Korean War and several other monuments, but also a much-loved local green space, with a 37 m artificial waterfall and a 310 m treetop skywalk that opened in March 2026. The night view is good too: in 2018 the park was named one of Incheon's ten best night-view spots.
A park that grew from a memorial
The park took shape in 1976, when the memorial tower on the summit of Subongsan was restored and landscaping and visitor facilities were added around it. Monuments now stand throughout the park, including the memorial tower, the Incheon Battle Memorial, a monument to the Korean student volunteers from Japan who fought in the war, and the Tower of Freedom and Peace. There is also a mangbaedan, an altar where people displaced from homes in the North hold memorial rites facing their hometowns on holidays.
What to see
- Skywalk: a treetop walkway 1.8 m wide and 310 m long. It was originally planned as an observation tower but was redesigned as a "treetop trail" after residents asked for the landscape to be protected. At its highest point it is about 20 m above the ground, with views over downtown Incheon towards the West Sea, and one viewing section has a glass floor. A glass-walled rest area along the way displays historic photographs of Incheon.
- Barrier-free forest path: a wooden boardwalk leads to the skywalk and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Animal sculptures along the way keep children entertained.
- Artificial waterfall: a two-tier cascade 37 m high and 122 m wide, billed as the largest artificial waterfall in Korea. A walkway runs between the tiers, and performances are sometimes staged in front of it.
- Eunyul Talchum Training Centre: home to a masked dance tradition from Eunyul in Hwanghae Province, with intangible heritage performances held throughout the year. The dance survived because performers who fled south during the Korean War settled in Incheon, a story that echoes the refugees' altar in the same park. If your timing is right, you can watch the lion dance and the witty banter of the servant character Malttugi up close.
- Cherry trees: the park has many old cherry trees and draws crowds in blossom season.
- Everyday facilities: a traditional archery range, badminton, tennis and basketball courts, a nature learning centre, an open-air stage and Subong Library are spread around the park, which stays busy with locals all day.
Tripto tips
- Opening and fees: open at all times, every day; free entry.
- Time needed: 1–2 hours for a loop taking in the skywalk and the memorial tower.
- Best time: cherry-blossom season in spring, and after dark for the city lights. In summer a children's water play area is also open.
- Parking: there is a car park by the entrance, but it fills quickly at weekends and in blossom season. The park is in the middle of the city, so a bus or taxi is less stressful.
- Watch out for: the park has several entrances and can be confusing on a first visit. If the skywalk is your goal, enter it precisely as your destination in a map app.
