About this place
Opened in December 2024 on the eastern shore of Wolmido, the Incheon National Maritime Museum is the first maritime cultural facility in the Seoul capital area. Three permanent galleries cover seaborne exchange from prehistory to today, ports and shipping, and the lives of coastal communities, and there is also a children's museum and an immersive digital gallery. The permanent exhibition is free, so it is an easy stop on a walk around Wolmido.
A maritime museum on Wolmido
Plans began with a feasibility study in 2017. Construction started in November 2021, the building was completed in May 2024 and the museum opened on 11 December 2024. With 17,318 m² of floor space over four storeys, it was designed with low, streamlined forms that follow the shoreline, Wolmisan hill and the island's skyline. Given Incheon's growth into a modern port city after it opened to foreign trade, Wolmido, overlooking Incheon Port and the Yellow Sea, is a fitting site. In June 2025 it was registered as a first-class general museum.
Three permanent galleries
- Maritime Exchange Gallery, "The Sea Opens the Way": follows the history of contact across the sea from prehistoric times to the present and shows how the sea has linked people and cultures.
- Shipping and Ports Gallery, "The Sea Connects the World": introduces Korea's ports and maritime logistics and how the country is tied to the world by sea.
- Maritime Culture Gallery, "The Sea Embraces Life": fishing, sea beliefs and marine art, the stories of people who have lived with the sea.
Visiting with children
The children's museum is free like the permanent galleries but runs on online reservations. In the immersive digital gallery, wall-to-wall projections show sea-themed films, and special and themed exhibitions change regularly, such as "Whales and Humans" in 2025 and "Odyssey: The Adventures of Odysseus in Greek Myth" in 2026. The outdoor exhibition garden is open from 07:00 to 22:00, good for an evening stroll by the water.
Tripto tips
- Time needed: about 1 hour 30 minutes for the permanent galleries, 2 hours or more with the children's museum and special exhibitions. Combine it with Wolmido and Incheon Chinatown for a half day.
- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30). Closed on Mondays (or the next weekday if Monday is a public holiday), 1 January and on Seollal and Chuseok days.
- Admission: the permanent galleries, children's museum and free special exhibitions cost nothing; only some special exhibitions charge a fee.
- Getting there: from Incheon Station (Line 1 and Suin-Bundang Line), take bus 45 from Exit 1 to "Wolmi Theme Park", then it is a one-minute walk. Bus 10 to "Wolmido terminus" leaves you about nine minutes away. The Wolmi Sea Train that circles the island also has a Museum station.
- Parking: 205 spaces; KRW 600 for the first 30 minutes, then KRW 300 per 15 minutes, up to KRW 6,000 a day. Spaces run short at weekends and on holidays, so use the free Wolmi Park car park No. 2.
- Good to know: backpacks and school bags must go in the ground-floor lockers, wheeled shoes are not allowed, and tripods and selfie sticks are banned.
