About this place
Tall reeds stretch endlessly over the mudflats where river meets sea, and a channel winds through them in a perfect S. Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve is the showcase of Korea's southern coastal wetlands, where boardwalks take you right into a landscape of tidal flats, reed beds and migratory birds. The view of the channel from the observatory at sunset is Suncheon's signature image.
What kind of place is it
Suncheon Bay is enclosed by Suncheon, Goheung County and Yeosu. The mudflats exposed at low tide alone cover about 12 km², and from the meeting point of the Dongcheon and Isacheon rivers to the edge of the flats lies a reed bed of about 5.4 km², considered the largest and best preserved in Korea.
The Suncheon Bay tidal flats were listed as a Ramsar wetland in 2006, the first coastal wetland in Korea to receive that status. In 2008 they were designated a Scenic Site, and in 2021 they became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats" together with flats on the southwest coast. Formerly known as Suncheon Bay Ecological Park, it is now run as Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve.
What to see
- Reed trail: cross Mujingyo Bridge and boardwalks lead through the reed beds. In autumn the reeds turn silver and brown; in early summer fresh shoots make the beds green.
- Yongsan Observatory: on a hill beyond the reeds, it looks down over the S-shaped channel, the reed beds and round islands of reeds. The old structure was replaced by a new two-storey timber observatory that opened in July 2025.
- Seepweed: the seepweed (chilmyeoncho) along the edge of the flats changes colour with the seasons and paints the mud red.
- Birds: more than 140 species have been recorded, including the internationally protected hooded crane and Saunders's gull. The cranes arrive in winter.
- Eco centre and observatory: an exhibition hall on wetland ecology and an astronomical observatory; night stargazing programmes require advance registration.
Nearby
- Suncheon Bay National Garden: created on the site of the 2013 International Garden Expo and linked to the wetland by SkyCube. It includes gardens in the styles of many countries and a lake garden.
- Suncheon Literature Museum: near the SkyCube Literature Museum station inside the reserve, an easy stop during a wetland walk.
- Seonamsa and Songgwangsa: of the two old temples on Jogyesan, Seonamsa is about 30 minutes by car from the National Garden.

- With the National Garden: the driverless SkyCube from Suncheon Bay National Garden reaches Literature Museum station near the wetland in about 8–10 minutes.
- When to go: for the sunset, climb to Yongsan Observatory about an hour before the sun goes down. Weekends in reed season are very crowded.
- Time needed: 2–3 hours for the reed trail and the observatory. The path to the observatory climbs, so wear comfortable shoes.
