About this place

At the end of a deep valley on the flanks of Chilbosan in Chilseong-myeon, Goesan, lies Gagyeonsa. The mountains close around it like the petals of a lotus, so even the drive in feels secluded, and inside the grounds you will find a Treasure-listed Buddha and hall, plus a monk's stupa and stele. It is not a big tourist temple, which is exactly why it is a good place to feel the calm of an old mountain monastery.

The stone Buddha in the pond

The temple's name comes from its founding legend. In the reign of King Beopheung of Silla, the monk Yuil was preparing timber to build a temple near today's Ssanggok-ri when a flock of crows kept flying off with the wood shavings. Puzzled, he followed them and found the shavings floating on a pond, and in the pond sat a glowing stone Buddha.

The monk was enlightened on the spot, filled in the pond and built a temple there, naming it Gagyeonsa, from the characters for "enlightenment" (覺) and "pond" (淵). It is a legend, of course, but it fits neatly with the fact that the temple's central image is a stone Buddha.

A small temple full of Treasures

Gagyeonsa holds four national Treasures: the stone Buddha in Birojeon, the monk's stupa and stele, and, since 2026, the Birojeon building itself. In 2026 the Korea Heritage Service designated ten long-overlooked secondary Buddhist halls as Treasures at once, and Gagyeonsa's Birojeon was one of them. Small as it is, the temple preserves buildings, sculpture and stonework together, which makes it a rewarding place to understand a mountain monastery as a whole.

What to see

  • Birojeon Hall: A three-by-three-bay hall which, judging by a repair inscription and its style, was rebuilt in 1499. It keeps entasis columns and multi-bracket construction and reuses components from early Goryeo, and in July 2026 it was designated a national Treasure.
  • Seated stone Vairocana Buddha: The stone figure enshrined in Birojeon, a Treasure since 1966, and the Buddha linked to the pond legend.
  • Stele and stupa of Master Tongil: A memorial stele and stupa for the eminent monk Tongil, both Treasures. Take a close look at the carving.
  • Daeungjeon Hall: The main worship hall, protected by North Chungcheong Province. Compare it with Birojeon to see how temple architecture changed over time.

Tripto tips

  • Visitor info: Open at all times, every day, with parking. This is a working temple, so keep your voice down in the halls and only take photos where allowed.
  • Time needed: 40 minutes to an hour for the grounds, a little longer if you stroll out to the stele.
  • Getting there: Public transport is impractical, so a car is the easiest option. The address is 451 Gagyeon-gil, Chilseong-myeon, Goesan-gun.
  • Best time: Summer, when the valley is green, and autumn foliage season. In winter the mountain road can be icy.
  • Combine with: Hiking trails on Chilbosan start about 1.6 km away, and together with the Ssanggok-ri area they make a good Goesan nature trip.
  • Contact: The grounds can get busy on ceremony days, so weekday mornings are best for a quiet visit. The temple's phone number is +82 43-832-6148.
