About this place
On a hillside in Dongnyang-myeon, close to Chungjuho Lake, the Chungju Ecology Experience Museum is a nature centre designed to let children learn by looking, listening and touching. It opened in 2009, and its indoor exhibition halls, small zoo and pond park sit together on one site, which makes it an easy half-day family outing. Admission is only KRW 2,000 for adults.
A different experience on each floor
- Basement play room: an indoor play area where toddlers and younger primary-school children can run around safely. Outside there is a shelter where you can eat a packed lunch.
- 1st floor: a creative activity room and a reading corner with nature field guides, plus a large board where visitors leave notes and drawings.
- 2nd floor main hall: specimens, videos and screen games explain why the otter, Chungju's emblem and a keystone species, became endangered, how a forest grows and changes (in a 3D film), how food chains work and how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. There are also corners on beetles and stag beetles, endangered freshwater fish and the micro-organisms that break down dead matter.
- 2nd floor small zoo: a reptile room and a parrot village let you watch unusual animals up close. The house rule is simple: do not touch or startle them.
Lake views and Yonggyo Ecology Park
Step outside on the 3rd floor and you reach a viewpoint over Chungjuho Lake, from where a walking path leads to Yonggyo Ecology Park. Its pond holds water lilies and lotus, water striders and fish, and herons drop by. A boardwalk lets you stroll around and watch the pond change with the seasons. An annex hosts craft sessions and simple science experiments.
Programmes and events
You can look round on your own, but the guides' explanations make the halls far more rewarding. Besides the regular guided talks there are craft sessions, science-lab programmes that look at living things through simple experiments, and "Eco Running Man", a mission game in which children hunt for QR codes around the building. Family events are held on Seollal, Chuseok, Children's Day and Hangeul Day, so check the events board on the website.
Who it suits
The exhibition is compact and the explanations are simple, which makes it a good fit for families with children from kindergarten to primary-school age. On a rainy day the indoor play room and halls easily fill an hour or two; on a fine day bring a packed lunch and walk on to the boardwalk in the ecology park. Also in Dongnyang-myeon, the Jodong-ri Prehistoric Site Museum shows Neolithic and Bronze Age dwellings and finds, and pairs well with a visit here.
Tripto tips
- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00 (until 17:00 from December to February). Closed on Mondays, 1 January, the days of Seollal and Chuseok, and the day after public holidays. The ecology park is always open.
- Admission: adults KRW 2,000, teenagers KRW 1,000, children KRW 500; free for visitors aged 65+ and preschool children. Chungju residents get 50% off. Craft activities cost extra.
