About this place

In front of the Yuseong-gu office in Daejeon, where the Gapcheon and Yuseongcheon streams meet, Yurim Park is a city park best known for its pond in the shape of the Korean peninsula. Tulips and cherry blossom in spring and chrysanthemums in autumn bring a steady stream of photographers, and it is close enough to the Yuseong hot springs for an easy detour.

How the park came about

Yurim Park was created by one man's gift. Lee In-gu, honorary chairman of Gyeryong Construction, donated KRW 10 billion to mark his 77th birthday, and after roughly two years of work the park opened on 28 June 2009. Its name comes from his pen name, Yurim, and a stone in the park records the donation.

What to see

  • Bandoji pond: a pond shaped like the Korean peninsula, with lotus, a water wheel and a pavilion. It is the most photographed spot in the park, and walking around its edge is like tracing Korea's coastline.
  • Flower garden: beds replanted each season, packed with tulips in spring and filled with different flowers as the seasons change.
  • Lawn and outdoor stage: a wide lawn used for concerts and events.
  • Literary Village Library: a small library inside the park, handy for a break on your walk.
  • Gapcheon riverside path: the park joins the riverside trail along the Gapcheon, good for a stroll or a bike ride.

Yuseong Chrysanthemum Festival

Autumn is the park's busiest season. Every year the Yuseong Chrysanthemum Festival covers the whole park in chrysanthemums. First held in 2010, it has grown steadily, with large flower sculptures and flower-lined paths throughout. It coincides with the autumn colours of the trees around the park, so the scene is especially vivid.

Good to know

Because the park sits where the Gapcheon and Yuseongcheon meet, there is a cool breeze off the water, and the trees around its edge give plenty of shade even in midsummer. In 2010 there was a plan to build a water park on the Gapcheon next to it, but it was dropped that August over safety and water-quality concerns. As a result the riverbank has stayed close to nature and is used for walking and cycling.

At weekends in tulip and chrysanthemum season, the area around Bandoji gets busy. Come on a weekday morning to enjoy the pavilion and water wheel reflected in the pond, and the flower beds, in peace.

Tripto tips

  • Opening hours: open 24 hours, year-round, with free entry and a car park.
  • Best time: April for cherry blossom and tulips; October–November for the chrysanthemum festival. During the festival the car park fills fast at weekends, so use public transport.
  • Time needed: 40–60 minutes is enough for the pond and flower garden.
  • Getting there: about 15 minutes on foot from Gapcheon or Wolpyeong stations on Daejeon Metro Line 1.
  • Combine with: soak your feet in warm spring water at the Yuseong hot-spring footbath 1.3 km away, then continue to the National Science Museum (about 2.3 km) and Hanbat Arboretum (about 2.9 km) for a full day in western Daejeon.
